Ben Franklin Academy and the SSO

BFA participates in the SSO, providing our families and alumni the opportunity to designate a portion of their state tax liability to the school’s financial aid program. The funding the school receives from this program will provide support for incoming financially eligible BFA students who are currently enrolled in public school.

Financial aid has always been a top funding priority for BFA. These funds will allow us greater flexibility in responding to financial aid needs and will support the school’s efforts to provide access to a BFA experience to any student who qualifies for admission.

Qualified Education Expense Credit

As of 2015, the Georgia state legislature has set aside $58 million for the Student Scholarship Organization (SSO), which provides financial aid to students moving from public to independent schools. Taxpayers may choose to redirect a portion of their state tax liability to a school of their choice.

Any taxpayer who will owe Georgia state tax for the current year may participate. Individual filers are eligible for a maximum $1,000 tax credit. Business owners may be able to participate at a maximum of $10,000.  A married couple filing jointly can receive up to a $2,500 tax credit. Additionally, C-corporations can designate up to 75% of their Georgia state tax to the program.

The $58 million cap will likely be met by the first of each year, therefore please submit an early application by December 15th to be approved for a tax credit.
