Admission procedures

Ben Franklin Academy is a senior high school, serving students in grades 10-12. We admit students 15 and older who want to come to our school. We are able to offer year-round admission since our program is so individualized for each student.

do not let cat outStudents who wish to attend BFA must have a personal interview with the Headmaster, Dean of studies, or other faculty members at the Headmaster's discretion, in order to determine the seriousness of the prospective student's intent. We only accept students who want to come to BFA and follow our 4 rules. We do not admit students from wilderness or drug rehabilitation facilities or who have a history of difficulties with illegal substances, or with serious behavior or emotional problems.

Upon request, we mail an information packet to the student and his/her family. Usually, this happens after an in-depth phone conversation with the Headmaster or Dean of Studies in which we explore the exact nature of the student's current educational situation and the appropriateness of our school for that student.

The parents and student visit the school for a personal interview with the Headmaster and bring samples of school work, copies of any prior psychological or educational testing, etc. At the interview(s), we try to assess the nature of the student's educational needs.

We require that parents complete an extensive health questionnaire and other admissions information forms. These documents are used by our faculty in developing the student's Individualized Educational Plan (IEP). We also ask students and their parents to sign a Student Enrollment Agreement in which the student agrees to follow our Four Rules, dress code and Work-Study requirements. All students must sign the Community Contract, which stipulates that the students must remain drug-free while attending BFA.

BFA regularly enrolls international students on I-20's. While BFA does not have an ESOL Program, international students with moderately good English have made substantial progress with BFA's individualized instruction.
