Drama
Over
the past eleven years, the BFA Theatre Program has provided an academic
and training course in the study of dramatic literature and stage
production. W ithin a three-show season, members of the theatre ensemble,
The Franklin Players, have produced plays as diverse as Ionesco's Rhinoceros, Molière's The School for Wives, the Jones and
Schmidt musical The Fantasticks!, and Sarah Ruhl's Eurydice. After a thorough study
of each selected play, students participate in all aspects of the
production series, as actors, directors, choreographers, set designers,
technicians, and stage managers. To support this study and training,
program director Dr. Pamela Turner provides her own expertise as
an academic and as a professional playwright-director, along with
the contributions of professional guest artists that have included
NYC playwright Andrew Ordover, musician Bryan Mercer, set designer
John Thigpen, and writer-actor Scott Turner Schofield. In 2005 and 2008, The Franklin
Players placed second in the regional Georgia One-Act Play Competition,
and in 2006, took first-place in the sub-regional contest.

2008/2009 Season
Last Tuesday by Donald Margulies
Fall 2008 Play and Georgia One-Act Play Competition
Ignoring newscasts of the bombing of a school bus, riders on the New York to Connecticut commuter train lose themselves in the daily trivia of their lives until a young, injured boy boards their compartment. Written in response to 9/11, this play examines the way Americans have distanced themselves from the problems of the world.
Eurycide by Sarah Ruhl
Winter 2009 Play
This retelling of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydices concentrates on the relationship between the unfortunate bride and her deceased father and examines the power of memory in keeping love alive. With lyric language and a raining elevator to the underworld, this play by the MacArthur Foundation "genius" award winner Ruhl is both beautiful and haunting.
Sorry, Wrong Number by Louise Fletcher
Spring 2009 Play
This classic suspense play features a bedridden woman who overhears the plot for her own murder when the phone lines get crossed up. Experimenting with teh melodramatic elements of the piece, this production features puppetry and original music and sound designs.
