SSO Tax Program
To assure that participants meet the state's December 31st deadline, Apogee recommends that all paperwork and checks be mailed by December 15th. Online tax filers can also participate in this program. These redirected tax dollars are not indefinitely available. The state has placed a cap on the maximum amount of funds that can be redirected during the 2009 tax year. With your help we are hoping that BFA will receive as much funding from this program as possible before the state limit is reached.
Qualified Education Expense Credit
In May 2008, the Georgia state legislature set aside $50 million for the Student Scholarship Organization (SSO), which provides financial aid to students moving from public to independent schools. Taxpayers may choose to redirect a portion of their state tax liability to a school of their choice.
Any taxpayer who will owe Georgia state tax for 2009 may participate. Individual filers are eligible for a maximum $1,000 tax credit. A married couple filing jointly can receive up to a $2,500 tax credit. Additionally, C-corporations can designate up to 75% of their Georgia state tax to the program.
Ben Franklin Academy and the SSO
BFA has decided to participate in the SSO, providing our families and alumni the opportunity to designate a portion of their state tax liability to the school’s financial aid program. The funding the school receives from this program will provide support for incoming financially eligible BFA students who are currently enrolled in public school or entering pre-first.
Financial aid has always been a top funding priority for BFA. These funds will allow us greater flexibility in responding to financial aid needs and will support the school’s efforts to provide access to a BFA experience to any student who qualifies for admission.

Participating in SSO and designating your tax credit to BFA is easy. The school has partnered with Apogee Georgia School Choice Scholarship Fund, a state approved Student Scholarship Organization, to facilitate your participation in this program.
