Each year Ben Franklin Academy celebrates National Poetry Month in April with The William H. Izlar, Jr. Poetry Contest. This annual poetry contest was established by the Mary Ryan and Henry G. Kuhrt Foundation in memory of BFA’s great friend and former longtime Overseer, Bill Izlar. Bill was a lifelong lover of poetry.
During this competition, current BFA students are encouraged to enter the contest. A student may submit up to two poems for consideration. Entries kept anonymous, and are judged by a panel of BFA faculty. The top student poets are awarded at a special ceremony where their poetry is read to the BFA community. This year's ceremony was held on April 23, with 4 students receiving awards.
